New Report Reveals Pittsburgh Steelers No Longer Pursuing Superstar In Surprising Twist

As Pittsburgh Steelers fans await a decision from Aaron Rodgers, the club is reportedly no longer pursuing a trade for Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith.

Last week, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Steelers and Miami Dolphins engaged in trade conversations for Jonnu Smith. The latter is entering the final year of his contract and is seeking a reworked deal prompted Miami to entertain offers, per Schefter.

But in an update, Schefter reported on Tuesday that Pittsburgh is “not expected to trade for” Jonnu Smith after all. Schefter added that the team will host free agent wide receiver Gabe Davis, who was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars last month following a disappointing 2024 season.

In March, the Steelers acquired superstar wide receiver D.K. Metcalf in a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks. After the draft, they continued to shake up their WR room by sending George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys.

The Steelers have one of the game’s better tight ends in Pat Freiermuth, but it made sense to inquire about Jonnu Smith while he was available. He had a career year in Miami last season, catching 88 passes for 884 yards and eight touchdowns en route to his first Pro Bowl selection.

Pittsburgh let Najee Harris (Los Angeles Chargers), Russell Wilson (New York Giants) and Justin Fields (New York Jets) leave in free agency. They’ve put their eggs in the Aaron Rodgers basket, but there’s no timeline on when he’ll make a decision on his playing future.

Jonnu Smith Staying In Miami Is The Best Scenario For Both Parties

At the end of the day, it makes the most sense for Jonnu Smith to continue his career in Miami. He never hit his ceiling with the Tennessee Titans, New England Patriots or Atlanta Falcons, so why would he seek a new team and hope to replicate last year’s production? Mike McDaniel got the most out of Smith, and it only makes sense to continue the working relationship.
