New Orleans Saints urged to swing pricy trade for former Pro Bowl QB

All 32 teams are ramping up their offseason activity to prepare for their first mandatory practices of the summer. That includes the New Orleans Saints, who are still hunting for their next franchise quarterback.

While second-round rookie Tyler Shough seemingly has the best chance of emerging as the starting QB in New Orleans, he’s competing with two other recent draftees. In other words, there’s not a lot of experience in the QB room.

The Saints are giving their young quarterbacks the opportunity to either sink or swim, but what if they realize a more competent arm with experience is what’s needed in New Orleans this year? There could be a solution nearby.

Specifically, Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay believes it’s worth a shot for the Saints to try trading for Kirk Cousins.

Kay’s proposal sees the Saints swap Jake Haener plus a fifth-round pick in 2026 to go with a sixth-round pick in 2027 in exchange for Cousins.

Of course, Cousins plays for one of the Saints’ NFC South division rivals. Would the Atlanta Falcons even pick up the phone to negotiate a trade that sends a veteran quarterback to the Saints, especially with the understanding that Cousins could pass along key features of the offense?

The only way this trade could get done is if the Saints are willing to pay the bulk of Cousins’ contract. If New Orleans gets desperate, why not consider adding a four-time Pro Bowl QB?
