The worst kept secret in the NFL became official on Tuesday when the New Orleans Saints announced former Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Chargers and Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore as the organization’s new head coach. He and his new quarterback, Derek Carr, have a history.
They go back to 2011!
Moore is three years older than Carr. The former played four years of college football at Boise State from 2008-2011. The latter played fives years at Fresno State (redshirt) from 2009-2013.
Although they were on opposite sidelines in 2009, 2010 and 2011, they only played against each other one time. It was a blowout.
Moore went 4-0 against the Bulldogs during his career. The Broncos won 61-10 during his freshman season, 51-34 during a sophomore season, and 51-0 during his junior season.
Fresno State moved on from Ryan Colburn in 2011. Derek Carr, a three-star recruit, took over as a redshirt sophomore. Kellen Moore was a senior at Boise State that year.
The undefeated, fifth-ranked Bulldogs traveled to California on October 7. They beat the Broncos 57-7.
Carr completed 17 of his 30 pass attempts for only 126 yards with one interception. He was completely flummoxed throughout all four quarters, even against the backups during garbage time. Moore, on the other hand, completed 23 of 31 attempts for 254 yards and three touchdowns— in less than three quarters.
Head coach Chris Peterson went to his backup quarterback with six minutes and 35 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Kellen Moore did not play the final 21 minutes after jumping out to a 43-point lead.
That was 14 years ago. Things have changed.
Moore played six years in the NFL with the Lions and Cowboys as an undrafted free agent. Carr was drafted No. 36 overall and played nine years with the Raiders. This upcoming season will be his third with the Saints.
Derek Carr is expected to be the starting quarterback in New Orleans in 2025. Kellen Moore will be his new head coach!
