Four quarterbacks entered the New Orleans Saints’ quarterback competition, only three are remaining after Thursday’s transaction.
Between rookie second-round pick Tyler Shough, 2024 fifth-round pick Spencer Rattler, and 2023 fourth-round pick Jaek Haener, the Saints clearly have a lot of competition. Yet, they also had another QB competing for snaps, but not anymore.
According to Nick Underhill of the New Orleans Football Network, the Saints have released rookie undrafted free agent signee Hunter Dekkers, reducing New Orleans’ QB depth chart from four to three.
Dekkers signed with the Saints after spending time at Iowa State and Iowa Western in college. He was given a chance on a rookie tryout basis, and the Saints offered him a contract shortly thereafter. However, with training camp practice reps being so valuable during a heated competition, the Saints inevitably felt it was best to move forward with the QBs they’ve already invested draft picks in.
The Saints signed punter Kai Kroeger to fill the roster spot left vacant by the departure of Dekkers.
It’s also possible that the Saints sign a more experienced veteran to help show the more inexperienced quarterbacks the ropes as they continue getting acclimated to life in the NFL. For now, it’s just Dekkers getting trimmed from the roster, but another roster move involving a quarterback could be coming soon.
