A week ago, the Jaguars coaching search seemed completely doomed. But, the firing of general manager Trent Baalke allowed the team to circle back with former Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen and ultimately get one of their top targets.
Coen had his introductory press conference on Monday, and altogether did a nice job. But, his first attempt at doing the famous “DUUUUUUVAL” chant did not go as planned.
Coen, 39, has quickly risen through the coaching ranks to be one of the most-respected young offensive minds in all of football. He spent significant time with Sean McVay in Los Angeles in various roles, and had two one-year stints at Kentucky as their offensive coordinator in 2021 and 2023. This year, he replaced Panthers head coach Dave Canales as the offensive coordinator in Tampa, and did a fantastic job. Tampa finished as the league’s third-best offense, and found a good running game for the first time in a few years.
Those things made him a hot target on the head coaching market. Jacksonville’s top two candidates were widely reported as Coen and former Lions offensive coordinator and current Bears coach Ben Johnson. Johnson decided on the Bears, in part because he didn’t want to work with Trent Baalke. And, when Coen turned down the Jags midweek last week, it became clear it was because of Baalke. The team fired Baalke, and hired him soon after.
Jacksonville is located in Duval County, Florida. And, fans love saying DUUUUUUUUUVAAAAAAAL in a long, drawn-out fashion. Coen had his first crack it on Monday. Frankly, it didn’t go well.

That is not a very good DUUUUUUVAAAAAAAAAL to say the least.
But, the Jaguars do have a bright future if you squint high enough. Conceivably, Trevor Lawrence should be good in a solid situation, they have solid pass rushers, and Brian Thomas Jr. is a young star receiver. The offensive line and back 7 of the defense need to be rebuilt. But, the cupboard isn’t as bad as their 4-13 record this year.
