By now, Seattle Seahawks‘ quarterback Sam Darnold has firmly established himself as one of the NFL’s better signal callers.
Darnold began his impressive road back to relevance in 2024, when he threw for 4,319 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions while leading the Minnesota Vikings to a 14-3 record. However, the Vikings let Darnold walk in free agency, and he landed in Seattle.
Many wondered if Darnold could replicate his success without superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson and offensive guru Kevin O’Connell. But that’s exactly what Darnold did, throwing for 4,048 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 12 picks as the Seahawks’ starter, leading them to a 14-3 record as well, tops in the NFC.
However, now Seattle’s playoff run may well be over before it really begins.
On Thursday, Darnold popped up on the Seahawks’ injury list as “questionable” after he didn’t practice due to an oblique injury. After practice, he assured reporters that it was nothing serious.
“I felt a little something in my oblique,” Darnold said. “Just didn’t want to push it, wasn’t the day to push it. That was it. Just came inside, got some rehab and feel like I’ll be ready to play Saturday.”
However, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the injury may be more serious than Darnold led on, and he may well miss Saturday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Schefter noted that Darnold hasn’t thrown a football since injuring his oblique on Thursday, and while he expects to play, the Seahawks aren’t as confident.
Backup quarterback Drew Lock took starter reps on both Thursday and Friday and could be forced into action.
Nobody seems to know when or how Darnold’s injury occurred. But one thing is clear: it’s a problem for the Seahawks, and could well be one that ends a season that included Super Bowl dreams.
