Myles Garrett trade rumors have stalled but injury concerns could push things forward as Kyrie Irving did with the Cavs
As we have shared, the Cleveland Browns currently have held fast to their plan to keep DE Myles Garrett. That doesn’t mean everything will continue down that path but the Browns will have a chance to have face-to-face conversations with other teams and even Garrett’s agents at the NFL combine starting next week.
As a part owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers, it is interesting that Garrett could use the same threat that Kyrie Irving used to get out of Cleveland.
For those who are not both Browns and Cavs fans, Irving requested a trade back in 2017 to escape the shadow of LeBron James. Under contract for two more seasons (same as Garrett), Irving used the threat of surgery to get what he wanted, according to multiple reports, including on Cleveland dot com:
But according to multiple sources, Irving threatened to sit out the season and have surgery on his knee, convincing Gilbert and Cleveland’s front office that the relationship was not salvageable.
Why bring this up in relation to Garrett’s request? Earlier this season, Garrett’s problem with his feet was a big story. As noted by Mary Kay Cabot, surgeries on those feet could be on the table:
Is surgery under consideration now?
“We talked about it, but that’s something that we’ll probably talk about further down the line,” he said during his weekly availability on Friday as the Browns gear up for the Giants here on Sunday. “Hopefully the pain and everything else is something that we deal with and it goes away. But the issue itself is something that I’ll probably have to deal with for however long I end up playing. So it’s just about managing that and playing through it.”
While Garrett downplayed the need for surgery during the season, could he, like Irving, use it in the gamesmanship of trying to get a deal? Remember Garrett is in constant contact with LeBron, who seemingly encouraged a trade request, and Klutch Sports tends to pull every lever they can to get what they want.
It seems unlikely that Garrett would want to make a threat of this nature or is considering surgery at this point. His agents, on the other hand, could make the same threat that got Irving traded out of Cleveland.
Do you think Garrett would let his agents make the same threat that Irving’s did to force a trade out of Cleveland? Would it change how you think about Garrett if they do?
