The point of having joint practices is to go against somebody in a different colored jersey after a couple of weeks of training camp. It’s a breath of fresh air to gauge the players against another opponent and scheme. However, the main objective is to get out of these sessions injury-free.
Unfortunately for the San Francisco 49ers, that was not the case on Thursday afternoon. First-round pick and the player the Niners are invested in heavily for the next potential decade limped off the field after going down with an injury during a red zone drill. Williams was spotted grabbing his left knee. The medical staff attended to Williams, who eventually got to his feet and gingerly walked to the sideline. The injury occurred during the 11th period, which is toward the end of practice, as there are 14 periods.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan believes it’s not a serious injury:
“He had a good exam. Hopefully, just hyper-extended his knee. So, we’re gonna get a further evaluation now. But it looked good when we examined it.”
Shanahan believes Williams would have been able to play on Saturday if it were a regular-season game. The expectation is for Williams to miss roughly a week, pending further evaluation.
Rookie running back Jordan James will have surgery on a broken finger. James will miss a few weeks. This is the second injury James has suffered since training camp began. After Isaac Guerendo’s injury, the 49ers are down to four backs between Christian McCaffrey, Patrick Taylor Jr., Corey Kiner, and Ameer Abdullah.
Defensive tackle Jordan Elliott is having back issues, which is why he missed practice. C.J. West is likely to slide into Elliott’s role. One of the Denver Broncos reporters tweeted that West beat All-Pro Quinn Meinierz for a sack.
Defensive backs Marques Sigle and Darrell Luter were evaluated for concussions and checked out OK. Both of them cleared the concussion protocol.
