Multiple Reports: Steelers Never Inquired About Trading for Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence
Steelers Now Steelers Now

The Pittsburgh Steelers have never reached out to the Jacksonville Jaguars to inquire about trading for quarterback Trevor Lawrence, according to multiple reports. The rumor started on Thursday morning, as Ryan Burr of Big Ten Network claimed the Steelers have made inquiries to the Jaguars about a trade for Lawerence. Burr said it was directly from the horses mouth in the Jags organization.

That certainly appears not to be the case.

“A Jaguars source totally refuted that the Steelers even called to inquire about Trevor. “Laughable” that Jags would even consider it, Florida Times-Union sports columnist Eugene Frenette wrote on X.

The Lawrence report by Burr was also debunked by ESPN reporter Michael DiRocco. DiRocco said a Jaguars source told him there is “no chance” that the Jaguars are moving on from their starting quarterback, one year after signing him to a massive contract, with DiRocco’s source calling the notion “ridiculous.”

Mark Kaboly of the Pat McAfee Show also said the Steelers were taken back about the report.

“The Steelers in no way imaginable inquired about trading for Trevor Lawrence and have no interest in even reaching out to the Jaguars about acquiring Lawrence, a Steelers source told Kaboly.

#Jaguars source totally refuted that @Steelers even called to inquire about Trevor. “Laughable” that Jags would even consider it.

Lawrence signed a five-year, $275 million contract extension in 2024 that has $200 million in guaranteed money. The Steelers would be on the hook for a good majority of that contract if they trade for Lawrence. So the rumor never really made sense.

Lawrence’s deal also includes a no-trade clause, so he would have to approve such a move. The Jaguars fired Doug Pederson after the 2024 season and recently fired general manager Trent Baalke. The Jaguars do not currently have a general manager, with new head coach Liam Coen expected to play a role in finding a new one. They’ve been conducting interviews this week.

Lawrence played in 10 games in 2024, missing time with both an AC joint sprain in his left shoulder and a concussion. He finished the 2024 season ranked 29th in passer rating (85.2), 17th in QBR (59.5), 20th in adjusted net yards per attempt (5.99) and 25th in EPA per drop back (0.03).
