How much should garbage time touchdowns really matter?

The Eagles made sure to play a game that the Chiefs would have a hard time celebrating, but that didn’t stop some online fans from trying to award consolation prizes after the Super Bowl. The Chiefs offense struggled throughout the entire game, but Patrick Mahomes finally connected with rookie WR Xavier Worthy late in the third quarter for a touchdown, and then again later for a second score in the fourth.

It’s not often that you get garbage time in a Super Bowl, let alone in the third quarter with a team up 34-0, which is maybe why they’re having such a hard time accepting the reality of the situation. But, for as much noise as Chiefs fans are making about this magical late-game performance, it seems like most NFL fans weren’t all that impressed given the timing of the feat.

If the tables were reversed, almost assuredly Eagles fans would not be holding on to a couple of plays that didn’t end in disaster — they’d be demanding accountability for why the team looked so ill-prepared for the better part of 60 minutes.

Luckily, that isn’t something Eagles fans will need to worry about this offseason, and can instead celebrate the many plays that led to winning the Super Bowl, and all the fun that’s come with it.
