Let’s discuss how Kansas City’s Super Bowl LIX loss might motivate the team this season.
As you’ll remember, the Kansas City Chiefs lost their bid to become the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls with a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in February. So on Thursday, reporters were asking Kansas City players if that provided additional motivation for 2025.
“I think it’ll be good for us at the end of the day,” said quarterback Patrick Mahomes. “I mean, obviously, looking back you want to win the game. But a lot of those guys hadn’t lost one; [several guys who] hadn’t ended a season on a loss are on this team now. So I’m sure they’ll be motivated to go back out there, try to find a way to get to the Super Bowl and win it this year.”
Defensive end George Karlaftis is one of those Kansas City players who hadn’t ended an NFL season with a loss.
“It definitely serves as motivation going into this season,” he said. “You never want to end a season like that — but it’s gonna be motivation for this year, for sure.”
Running back Isiah Pacheco is another one.
“I went back home [and] worked out at the gym where I started at the YMCA and started reminiscing. You’ve got people [there] that are from New Jersey, so they wear Eagle hats and stuff all the time. They questioned me — like, ‘Wow, like you’re in here! We got y’all this year.’ That right there only motivates you to go harder — to continue to work.”
A year ago, there was a lot of talk about how the team’s chance to get a three-peat would be a big motivator for Kansas City players. But if it was, it didn’t work. Will the Super Bowl loss be an even bigger motivator?
Let’s talk about it!
