Touchback at the receiving team’s 35 or kicking off from the kicking team’s 30? Which would drive more returns?

For all of the interviews that members of the Green Bay Packers organization took this offseason, there have been remarkably few departures from the coaching staff and front office. Offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich remains after talking to multiple other teams about playcalling roles, and now a key member of the personnel department is locked in to remain for another season.

That individual is Jon-Eric Sullivan, who has the title of vice president of player personnel. Sullivan is one of Brian Gutekunst’s most trusted advisors on the personnel side, and he is widely viewed as a future NFL general manager. To that end, he interviewed with multiple teams this offseason about their GM openings, but with the Jacksonville Jaguars finally announcing the hiring of James Gladstone, every spot is now filled and Sullivan will resume his work in Green Bay. That’s a nice little boost to a personnel department that has a big offseason coming up.

Meanwhile, the NFL is contemplating adjustments to the new kickoff rules that started in 2024. There were more touchbacks than the league seemed to be hoping for last season, so there are a couple of options — moving the spot where touchbacks go, or moving the kickoff spot back to the 30, where it was for a long time.

We’ll see which direction the league goes, but expect there to be a decision at the annual meeting later this spring.

There are a couple of options for the kickoff: moving the touchback to the 35 or moving the kickoff itself back from the 35 to the 30. Meanwhile, there is movement on adding some additional "objective" penalties to the replay assist process -- but what about including the Skycam angles?
