Seth Walder doesn’t think too highly of the moves the Green Bay Packers have made so far.
As the Green Bay Packers prepare for training camp on July 23rd, actual news has dried up. The content industrial complex, however, seems to have no problem creating controversy in the absence of substance.
One such topic was stoked over the weekend by ESPN’s Seth Walder, who presented his rankings for best and worst NFL offseasons.
The verdict? A middling C-plus grade, with only seven NFL teams scoring lower across free agency, the draft, and coaching changes.
The team’s most notable—and most criticized—move was signing guard Aaron Banks to a four-year, $77 million deal. Despite being a second-round pick in 2021, Banks has yet to prove himself as an elite player, with durability issues and below-average performance metrics in both pass and run blocking. While head coach Matt LaFleur praised Banks’ experience and scheme fit, analysts remain skeptical of the investment.
In contrast, the Packers’ top draft pick, wide receiver Matthew Golden, drew praise for his elite speed and potential to become a No. 1 receiver. Teammates and coaches have been impressed with his work ethic and performance in offseason practices, suggesting he may play a major role in the upcoming season.
Elsewhere in the NFC North, the Bears and Lions received slightly better offseason grades (B-minus), though Detroit was criticized for questionable draft picks. The Vikings, like the Packers, earned a C-plus but were commended for moving forward with young quarterback J.J. McCarthy.
Do these grades ultimately mean anything? Nope.
