With just a few months left in his tenure. Murphy is still hard at work trying to improve the Packers and the NFL for future generations.
The Green Bay Packers made a truly wise decision in the early 1990s when they decided on Bob Harlan to be the team’s president and CEO. Harlan was instrumental in revitalizing a franchise that had been mediocre for more than two decades, both by hiring the right general manager (Ron Wolf) to fix the on-field product and by making some excellent decisions about Lambeau Field and the area around it.
When Harlan retired in 2008, he did so with a Super Bowl ring and with a legacy that will be difficult to match.
His successor, Mark Murphy, is fast approaching the end of his own tenure in that role, and history will likely look back at him as someone who tried to continue the momentum that Harlan built before him. The expansion and development of Lambeau Field has continued, and Murphy has helped spearhead the Titletown District just outside the stadium. Meanwhile, the Packers won another Super Bowl under his watch and are a perennial playoff team, making a total of five NFC Championship appearances in 17 years.
Murphy has dealt with plenty of turmoil in his time at the helm of the Packers, of course. His first offseason saw him helping GM Ted Thompson to navigate a quarterback controversy amid Brett Favre’s retirement (and un-retirement) saga. He later supported new GM Brian Gutekunst through another drama-filled quarterback change from Aaron Rodgers to Jordan Love as well as through a tense head coach firing and hiring situation.
Besides all that, he has admirably represented the Packers in league meetings and has finally helped bring the NFL Draft to Green Bay. This offseason is Murphy’s last hurrah, and hopefully Packers fans will acknowledge the important role he has played in continuing to grow the Packers organization.
Let’s hear what he has to stay to start the month of February.
