Yes, matching the Packers — because football didn’t start being played in 1966.

The Kansas City Chiefs advanced to Super Bowl LIX yesterday, beating the Buffalo Bills 32-29 to make it to their third straight Super Bowl. Yes, the Chiefs won the last two, and they are trying to become the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls.

But Green Bay Packers fans know more than anyone that we should not accept — even for a moment — any publication that says this would be the first three-peat in NFL history.

This has happened twice before, with the Packers responsible for both streaks. One coach whose teams accomplished the feat has his name on the stadium the Packers now play in, while the other’s last name adorns the trophy that the Chiefs are trying to win.

Curly Lambeau’s Packers teams won three straight from 1929 to 1931, while Vince Lombardi’s won in 1965, ‘66, and ‘67. There’s simply no excuse to let a conversation about a three-peat go without acknowledging these championship streaks simply because the game we now recognize as the Super Bowl started after that 1966 season.

Don’t give in on this. It will be a long two weeks, but don’t let anyone get away with erasing the Packers’ history. At the very least, let’s make sure that any mention of a first comes with the qualifier that it would be the first Super Bowl three-peat.
