Miscues down the Colts against the Rams

Stunned.

Many moments of frustration and disappointment, but two moments stand out as truly stunning; one beyond belief. The Indianapolis Colts gave everything the Los Angeles Rams could handle and still head home with a loss. It was always going to be a tough game. That was clear from the beginning. A loss here isn’t the end of the world. It was more of the way in which it occurred that is going to make for a long week.

With the game tied at 20, the Rams were deep in their own territory. A first down bomb and 88-yard score was heartbreaking. Realizing there were only ten men on defense for the Colts was another. The defense allowed Matthew Stanford and Puka Nacua to tear them apart all afternoon. The only time they held those two in check was when Nacua went to the locker room early in the third. Otherwise, the Colts had no answer. Still, the game was tied with everything up in the air. Having only ten men out there was unacceptable, and the Rams made the Colts pay.

That was bad and the ultimate back breaker, but what Adonai Mitchell did was next level stunning. Early in the third, Mitchell made a beautiful stabbing grab and raced down the sidelines. It was a walk in touchdown until it wasn’t. The ball bounced out the back of the endzone as Mitchell tried to stretch it, taunt it, secure it…? We may never know because it was fumbled. We witnessed what Jonathan Taylor did last year in Denver. That was unfortunate, but players do it. They shouldn’t, but they do. What Mitchell did was accidental but incredibly stunning to witness.

Adonai Mitchell is going to take a lot of heat for this game because not only did he fumble a touchdown, but he also held on a Jonathan Taylor touchdown wiping 14 total points off the board. He will get his share but maybe too much as the defense stiffened at times but allowed 462 yards of offense to the Rams. To be tied under two minutes was incredibly fortunate given everything that occurred up to that point. No one wanted a Colts win more than Mitchell, but with too many miscues from himself and the defense, they will have to wait until next Sunday for redemption.
