Former Minnesota Vikings star defensive end Jim Marshall has passed away following a lengthy period in hospital.

Marshall, who died on June 3 at the age of 87, was a star on the team’s defensive line during the Purple People Eaters era and played in four Super Bowls. He held the record for 270 consecutive career starts.

The Vikings paid tribute to the player on social media, highlighting his impact on the franchise and the standard he set.

“Marshall set the standard for what it meant to be a Minnesota Viking, starting 270 consecutive games, appearing in 4 Super Bowls and serving as team captain for 14 consecutive seasons,” they wrote in a tweet.

The Vikings Credit Jim Marshall With Making Them Formidable

The former DE was drafted out of Ohio State by the Browns in 1960 and was traded to Minnesota after his rookie year. He spent the rest of his career with the NFC outfit.

The Vikings have retired Marshall’s No. 70, while he’s in the team’s ring of honor.

Marshall is survived by his wife, Susan.

“He gave everything he had at every step, fostering a Vikings identity hallmarked by a relentless pursuit that took the team from fledgling to formidable,” the team wrote in a statement after Marshall’s passing.

WE at TPS offer condolences to Marshall’s family, friends, loved ones, and, of course, the Vikings organization.

May he rest in peace.
