After Sunday’s big 27-24 win over the Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings fans are back to trusting J.J. McCarthy as the starting quarterback of the future. While a win over the team’s toughest opponent to date is enough to boost spirits, we’ve also seen McCarthy suffer two injuries in the past two seasons, one of which knocked him out for an entire year. In other words, having a capable backup QB is a must.
Is undrafted rookie Max Brosmer the right man for the job? The Vikings apparently didn’t think so earlier this season when they traded for Carson Wentz, who has since suffered a season-ending shoulder injury that requires surgery.
Recently, Vikings trade rumors have suggested that they’re targeting another veteran quarterback to add to the mix. Those talks have persisted, even after the team added John Wolford to the practice squad. Yet, on Monday, coach Kevin O’Connell suggested the Vikings don’t need to make another addition to their QB room.
“To have that third guy (John Wolford) in there with Josh (McCown) and Jordan (Traylor), I feel pretty comfortable with that room right now,” O’Connell said.
Thus, the Vikings will likely stand pat at the QB position before Tuesday’s NFL deadline passes. But that doesn’t mean general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah can’t find other ways to improve his team’s chances of reaching the postseason after a 5-3 start. If so, strengthening the team’s group of cornerbacks would be a good place to start.
