FOXBOROUGH — DeMario Douglas has made a lasting impression on New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel.
Ahead of the first day of mandatory minicamp, Vrabel spoke with reporters and was asked what he’s learned about Douglas both on and off the field. Before he even began his answer, the head coach had a huge smile on his face.
“Well, I love the person. I love his attitude. I love his spirit,” Vrabel said. “He loves to practice. He loves to play this game. He loves football. That shows.
And with that, he’s expecting a big season from the third-year receiver due to his versatility in the new system.
“I think he’s gotten better. We’re moving him around different places, and he’s picked up everything that we’ve asked him to do,” Vrabel continued. “The more he understands, the more we give him. I’m excited to see where he continues to be and continues to grow.”
The Patriots drafted Douglas in the 6th round of the 2023 NFL Draft, and he quickly proved himself, becoming a steal. However, despite his strong quality of play on the field, things have not been easy for Douglas as he has now had to play under three different head coaches in his first three seasons in the NFL.
He started with Bill Belichick, where he finished the year with 49 receptions for 561 receiving yards and zero touchdowns. Then, under Jerod Mayo, he recorded 66 receptions for 621 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns. But now it’s time to see what he can do with Vrabel.
The Patriots now have an experienced head coach, their quarterback of the future, and are building up the roster around him. It’s a recipe for success that should certainly involve Douglas.
