You typically can bank on fights breaking out during NFL joint practices, but you don’t usually bet on those scraps involving head coaching.

Alas, most coaches aren’t like Mike Vrabel, who reportedly was bloodied during a dustup at Wednesday’s joint practice between the New England Patriots and Washington Commanders.

Here’s how MassLive’s Chris Mason broke it down:

“TreVeyon Henderson picked up a blitzer and took him to the ground violently. They started rolling/scrapping. Mike Vrabel physically jumped in to try to break it up. Will Campbell saw what was happening and dove on a defender. Scrum broke out. Vrabel bled.”

Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald shared a similar account.

“Mike Vrabel pulled out from the bottom of a huge pile of players, and he’s now bleeding from his right cheek,” Callahan wrote in an X post.

The Patriots don’t allow reporters to shoot video during practices, so there weren’t any clips available at the time of this writing. However, Patriots fan Pete Collins, host of the “Foxborough Fellas Podcast”, shared a photo from the fan section.

Vrabel met with reporters before Wednesday’s practice, and with the Patriots and Commanders taking Thursday off, we likely won’t hear his account of the dustup until after Friday’s preseason game at Gillette Stadium.

Nevertheless, Vrabel surely endeared himself to his new players by getting his hands dirty.
