Mike Vrabel made his return to Nissan Stadium on Sunday as the head coach of the New England Patriots, not as the head coach of the Tennessee Titans. The fans in Nashville wish it was different.
They want him back.
One of the worst teams in the NFL fired its replacement for Vrabel after less than two full years. Meanwhile, he seems to have turned a corner with his new team in Massachussetts.
The Titans offered Vrabel his first opportunity to be a head coach in the National Football League in 2018. He led a perennial basement dweller to the playoffs in year two after a 9-7 record in year one.
That was only just the beginning.
Tennessee went 11-5 in 2020. It won 12 games for the first time since 2008 in 2019 and lost in the Divisional Round of the playoffs.
Although Mike Vrabel was the first person to find success with the Titans in more than a decade, he was used as the scapegoat for back-to-back losing seasons in 2022 and 2023. He did not want to trade AJ Brown. General manager Jon Robinson did so anyway. That proved to be a terrible idea.
Vrabel was fired after the 2023 season and replaced by Brian Callahan. Callahan won only four of his first 23 games with the organization. He was fired earlier this month after less than two full years.
New England hired Vrabel during the offseason. The Patriots seem to be a legitimate playoff team and potential Super Bowl contender at 4-2 behind strong play from Drake Maye.
They returned to Nashville with Vrabel on Sunday.
It is not often that the visiting head coach receives cheers as he walks out of the tunnel. Especially after they were fired by the home team.
Mike Vrabel received a hero’s welcome.
