On Tuesday, news broke that the New England Patriots and Marcus Jones agreed to a three-year contract extension. The extension was well-deserved considering Jones is a key part of the defense and the special teams unit.
At the time, we didn’t know the financials of the deal, but we now do- it’ll be a three-year deal worth $36 million that can go up to $40 million with incentives. This is a hefty price but well worth it considering the caliber of player that Jones is.
On Wednesday, head coach Mike Vrabel spoke about the decision to extend Jones and heaped a ton of praise upon his player.
“It’s something that we’ve talked about and wanted to,” Vrabel said on Tuesday, via 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Alex Barth. “I think he embodies everything we’re looking for here in a player, in a teammate, in the community. It’s something we were excited to do.”
That’s high praise from Vrabel, who usually isn’t one to hand out compliments. It’s even more impressive considering Jones was brought in by a prior regime and has only been with Vrabel for months.
So far in 2025, Jones has played in all eight games and has collected 36 tackles, six tackles for loss, nine pass deflections, and two interceptions. On special teams, Jones has returned 10 punts for 216 yards and one touchdown. Jones is currently tied for third in interceptions and punt return yards.
As a rookie in 2022, Jones earned First-team All-Pro honors as a returner after leading the league in punt return yards. Jones also has five touchdowns in 39 career games.
Before the extension, Jones was slated to be a free agent after the season. Instead, the versatile athlete will be in Foxboro through 2028 and can focus on getting his team back to the playoffs in 2025.
