Marcus Jones will stick with the Patriots for a few more seasons, as New England agreed to a contract extension with him on Tuesday.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported that it’s a three-year, $36 million deal.
The 27-year-old cornerback is having a great season, and head coach Mike Vrabel is excited about Jones’ new contract.
“It’s something that we’ve talked about and wanted to,” Vrabel said on Tuesday, via 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Alex Barth. “I think he embodies everything we’re looking for here in a player, in a teammate, in the community. It’s something we were excited to do.”
Jones has played a significant role in New England’s defensive turnaround this season. In the first eight games, the 2022 third-round pick recorded two interceptions, nine pass breakups and one sack.
Securing a contract extension with Jones now was critical, since he was set to become an unrestricted free agent at season’s end.
The Patriots still have nine regular season games remaining, along with a potential postseason run ahead. The contract extension now allows Jones to focus entirely on his performance, rather than worrying about his future.
