New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez has been coping with a hamstring injury for the past month, and head coach Mike Vrabel provided an update on the star player.
During Vrabel’s media availability on Wednesday, he was asked if Gonzalez would take the practice field that day.
“I don’t think we will see him today,” Vrabel said on the likelihood of Gonzalez practicing. “But he’s continuing to improve, which is positive, and working hard, but I don’t think we will see him today on the practice field.”
Typically, if a player misses practice on Wednesday, it’s not a good sign for their chances of playing in a game on Sunday. Given Gonzalez’s extended absence, it’s likely he won’t be ready to compete against the Miami Dolphins this week.
However, it does seem encouraging that Gonzalez is improving, which means he may be able to return to practicing next week.
The Patriots allowed Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Geno Smith to throw for 362 yards last Sunday. Many of Smith’s big plays were a result of Gonzalez’s absence in the secondary, making it urgent for him to return before facing quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers and Josh Allen in the coming weeks.
