Mike Tomlin’s preferred destination has been revealed following his departure from Pittsburgh.
Tomlin resigned as head coach of the Steelers on Tuesday, less than 24 hours after losing to the Houston Texans in the first round of the playoffs.
The 53-year-old leaves with an impressive run of non-losing seasons (19), but had also failed to win a playoff game in nine years.
Tomlin oversaw a Super Bowl capture, two conference championships and seven division titles. However, his playoff record leaves a lot to be desired at 8-12. He opted to leave after yet another postseason disappointment, walking away after nearly two decades as the Steelers head coach.
Josina Anderson is now reporting that the Virginia native would prefer a warm-weather environment moving forward.
“Mike Tomlin has told people that he would prefer to coach in a warm-weather environment, if it fits,” the reporter shared via a tweet.
She also noted that Tomlin had wanted to leave Pittsburgh before the start of the season.
The facts of the matter are: League sources heard that Mike Tomlin was contemplating leaving Pittsburgh even before the season started. Adding, there’s been a belief that Tomlin did not feel appreciated with contingents around the city believing he should fired. “I would say this has been building gradually for the last 3 years,” the source opined.
Tomlin informed the team of his decision to step down in a meeting on Tuesday afternoon.
He has since released a statement.
“While this chapter comes to a close, my respect and love for the Pittsburgh Steelers will never change,” he wrote.“I am excited for what the future holds for this organization, and I will forever be grateful for my time coaching in Pittsburgh.”
The Steelers are now set to look into a coaching hire for just the fourth time since 1969. It was previously reported that they already have someone in mind.
Tomlin signed an extension with the team that would have kept him around until 2027, which included a team option for 2026.
Given that he was still under contract, the Steelers will retain his coaching rights. They would be eligible for compensation should he begin another job before the end of the 2027 season.
