Former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin will be featured in a new documentary called “The Object of the Game.” The documentary premiers Super Bowl week on Amazon Prime. It centers around former St. Ignatius High School football coach Chuck “Chico” Kyle, who is a legend in Northeast Ohio.
Kyle led the Wildcats to 11 state championships and four national titles in his 40-year career. The film is inspired by Kyle’s book of the same name, in which the longtime educator shares his wisdom on building a winning football program and how lessons learned on the gridiron can be applied to everyday life.
The film is directed by Matt Waldeck, a 2002 St. Ignatius graduate who also directed the documentary “Lovely Jackson” and produced the horror film “I See You,” starring Helen Hunt.
“At one time or another, every player or coach decided to pick up a football and said ‘yes, this is for me’,” Waldeck told Deadline. “This film is about that starting point—the values that last when the bright lights fade and a playing or coaching career ends. With the arrival of NIL deals, NCAA and high school football in America are in a business era, this series serves as a reminder of the fundamental ‘why’ of it all and the passion that drew us to the game in the first place.”
Tomlin is one of several big names featured in the documentary. Bill Belichick, Tony Dungy, Sean McVay, Urban Meyer, Tony Romo, Joe Thomas and Roger Goodell are also in the film.
In the trailer, there’s a brief clip of Tomlin setting up for an interview.
Steelers quarterbacks coach Tom Arth played at St. Ignatius under Kyle. Arth was mentioned as a potential candidate for the head coaching job at St. Ignatius High School in December, but the school named Tom Kaufman as head football coach and assistant athletic director. Kaufman becomes the 24th head football coach in the program’s history.
The Object of the Game documentary will be released in three parts. The dates have not been released yet.
