The Pittsburgh Steelers made several additions to their defense this past offseason. First-round pick Derrick Harmon strengthens the defensive line, Juan Thornhill steps in at safety, and both Darius Slay and Jalen Ramsey come over as new starters at cornerback.
So what do all of these stars coming to Pittsburgh do for the defense as a whole? Head coach Mike Tomlin certainly has lofty expectations.
“We feel really good about the prospects of this group,” Tomlin said on WDVE. “We’ve got to write that story. We’ve got enough talent, we’ve got enough schematics to do big, big things. When I say big things, I’m talking about historic things.”
The Steelers finished eighth in defensive DVOA in 2024. Their current unit – at least on paper – is better than the one they fielded in 2024. If they are a top-five unit, and the offense can be just a league-average unit, the Steelers have a higher ceiling than many national analysts are willing to admit.
