Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has an explanation for wide receiver Roman Wilson’s limited role in Week 1.

Pittsburgh Steelers second-year wide receiver Roman Wilson looked ready to take the team’s open vacancy as the No. 2 option after reeling in four catches for 96 yards this preseason. However, Wilson ultimately logged just 10 snaps against the New York Jets in Week 1.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin explained the reasoning behind Wilson’s disappointing start to the season.

“A lack of possession of the football and agenda relative to that day,” Tomlin said. “As I mentioned after the game, I got no intentions of explaining the minutia of rep distribution week in and week out. We got a really good collective. In some instances, highly specialized skill sets. In some weeks those skill sets are going to be highlighted and utilized. Some weeks they’re going to be minimized. There’s just a component of winning football games in today’s NFL and really don’t require a whole lot of explanation.”

Wilson has had a difficult start to his NFL career thus far. Shortly after Pittsburgh selected him in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, he suffered an ankle injury during the beginning stages of training camp.

That derailed his rookie season, as he spent the majority of it on injured reserve and failed to record a stat when on the field.

However, now fully healthy, he looks ready to produce whenever his number is called, just like he did during the preseason.

“You know, he’s had a good camp,” Tomlin said. “And he’s backed that up with some quality in-stadium play and so I feel good about the overall trajectory of him. … He’s gotta keep his foot on the gas and keep working.”

Wilson could have a chance to further prove his worth in Week 2 when the Steelers host the Seattle Seahawks.
