Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin tried to relate to local reporters during his weekly press conference on Tuesday.

The Steelers are 6-6 and have lost five of their last seven games. They haven’t won a playoff game in eight years and are tied for first place in the AFC North. Pittsburgh is tied with Baltimore, but the Ravens hold the tiebreaker going into the first of two matchups in the final month of the season.

Tomlin explained Tuesday why he remains confident in the team to bounce back and play well moving forward.

“Sometimes I answer it in a colorful way, but it’s what we do,” Tomlin said during his weekly press conference.

Tomlin occasionally relates his work to frequent “Tomlinisms,” but today tried to relate to reporters.

“It’s no different than what you guys do,” Tomlin said. “You guys might write a bad article or a couple of bad articles. Does it lessen your confidence in your ability to write articles the next time?”

Hopefully, this isn’t a bad article. But if it is, hopefully my next one is better.

“I imagine it doesn’t because you’ve been doing it all your adult lives,” Tomlin said.

Tomlin has led the Steelers for 18 seasons. He has only won a playoff game in four of them, but has never had a losing season below .500.

Sunday’s matchup in Baltimore will be a deciding factor in whether the Steelers make the playoffs or fall further down the AFC standings and closer to a high draft pick. The winner is in the driver’s seat, as Tomlin looks for his 19th non-losing year in his 19th season.

“Certainly our last performance wasn’t up to snuff,” Tomlin said. “But I don’t know that it lessens our belief or our ability to deliver individuals and collectively moving forward.”
