Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel has found himself on the hot seat this season as the team has struggled to be competitive during its first two games. First, the Dolphins lost to Indianapolis Colts on the road, 33-8. In the second game, Miami suffered a 33-27 home loss to the Patriots in which the defense failed to make a single stop.
After going 20-14 in his first two seasons at the helm of the Dolphins with two playoff appearances, Miami has gone 8-11, failing to make the playoffs in 2024. That shift has been enough for numerous Dolphins fans to call for his firing. It has gotten so bad, so quickly, that some Dolphins fans started, and completed, a GoFundMe to pay for a plane to fly a “Fire Mike McDaniel” banner over Sunday’s game.
After Sunday’s loss, Mike McDaniel was asked about the plane banner flying over Hard Rock Stadium that read, “Fire Grier. Fire McDaniel.” The “Grier” refers to Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier.
“I was coaching and calling a football game,” McDaniel replied. “I wasn’t spending my time considering what the fans were doing at all. Fans want their team to win, so I figure that if we win football games, I don’t think it’s personal. I think they want to win, and so do I.”
Reading his response probably doesn’t really send up any red flags or spark many questions. It’s the way McDaniel delivered it that has many fans wondering what exactly is going on with him.

Over on Instagram, the top comment on video of Mike McDaniel’s response has gotten almost 1,700 likes as of this writing. It reads, “Bro is back on drugs, it’s clear as day.”
Another comment with over 200 likes reads, “Oh my god how tf is he allowed to coach when he’s obviously high as a f—— kite? He’s so high that he probably hears the ghost of Ben Franklin.”
Many of the other comments were in same vein, saying things like, “Do they ‘randomly’ drug test coaches too? Or nah?”
All that being said, the way Mike McDaniel answered the question isn’t really that out of character for him. It is, however, a problem if the team is starting to tune him out because of his ultra laid-back demeanor.
