Despite the news earlier this week that former Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel was expected to take the job as the Chargers’ new offensive coordinator, it’s now being reported that he’s being interviewed for the Bills job as a replacement for Sean McDermott.

Early Friday morning, insider Dianna Russini reported that McDaniel was meeting with the Bills brass in hopes of still landing another HC gig. However, the expectation is that McDaniel will become the Chargers OC if he does not get chosen to lead one of the five other teams still searching for a head coach.

Normally when these sort of news breaks are reported, they’re essentially “all but done” except for putting pen to paper. However, there are still some rare occasions where it breaks from the norm of business is done in the NFL. Free agent players will reportedly “agree” to join a new team when the new league year starts but will have a change of heart in the 24 to 48 hours prior to the time when it can become official. The same could happen here with McDaniel and the Chargers.

Other notable former head coaches, including a former Bills OC in Brain Daboll, are up for the job alongside McDaniel. If I had to guess, I’d say Daboll is the guy for the job over McDaniel due to his previous success with Josh Allen and the offense. Still, nothing is over until it’s over.

For now, the Chargers have halted their search for a new offensive coordinator and until they begin to announce new interviews, I think it’s safe to say McDaniel is still their guy.
