In an article published by Rotowire ranking the NFL head coaches on the hottest seats entering the season, new Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy came in at No. 3 overall, a sign that expectations are already sky high.
As Rotowire noted, “McCarthy inherits a proud, veteran run Pittsburgh program with the weight of the succession burden from day one.”
While some may view those expectations as lofty for a first year head coach, the reality is the Steelers have never operated like a typical NFL franchise. The organization has long prided itself on stability, patience, and sustained success. Although Pittsburgh is currently in a postseason drought, Mike Tomlin leaves behind one of the league’s most accomplished coaching résumés, highlighted by a Super Bowl championship and an unprecedented streak of nearly two decades without a losing season.
That is an enormous standard for any successor to inherit.One of Tomlin’s defining strengths throughout his tenure was his ability to keep the locker room together. Steelers fans became accustomed to seeing the team suffer a frustrating loss one week, only to respond with a gritty upset victory the next. Regardless of outside criticism, the players consistently competed for him, and veterans such as Cam Heyward and T.J. Watt always seemed to know where they stood within the organization while helping establish the culture inside the locker room.
Whether McCarthy possesses that same ability to command a locker room remains to be seen. However, he enters Pittsburgh with a résumé that is remarkably similar to Tomlin’s. McCarthy has won a Super Bowl, consistently fielded competitive teams, and brings decades of NFL head coaching experience. Being the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers is one of the most prestigious jobs in professional football. While many NFL franchises cycle through coaches every few years, the Steelers have built their identity around continuity. That patience has historically been rewarded, but it also raises the expectations. If the Steelers fail to meet the organization’s standard and suffer multiple losing seasons, or even just one, it will be fascinating to see how a franchise known for stability responds.
