Mike Macdonald has ‘really positive’ injury update on Grey Zabel

The Seattle Seahawks not only lost another game to the Los Angeles Rams and therefore the NFC West lead, they also lost their promising rookie left guard in the process.

First-round pick Grey Zabel left Seattle’s 21-19 loss in the fourth quarter after Charles Cross fell backward onto his leg during Kenneth Walker’s touchdown run. Zabel limped off the field with assistance from trainers and did not return. He was replaced by Christian Haynes, who was making his season debut after spending the season on injured reserve.

A long-term injury to Zabel would be a potentially huge blow to the Seahawks offensive line and consequently the offense. While there’s still more imaging to be done, it looks as if the worst fears regarding Zabel may not be realized. Speaking with Seattle Sports 710 on Monday morning, Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald’s update on Zabel was on the encouraging side.

“I’ll say it’s optimistic right now,” Macdonald said. “Initial news is really positive but let’s get out of the fog here before I start making any declarations.”

Zabel had imaging done on his knee Monday morning and more details may be revealed during Macdonald’s media availability later this afternoon.

Even if it’s a minor injury that causes him to miss some time, akin to what Ernest Jones experienced just recently, that’s a lot better than having to make another major change to an interior offensive line that already has center Jalen Sundell on injured reserve.
