It seemed like Michael Penix Jr. was going to have to wait a while to earn the starting job in Atlanta after he was drafted by the Falcons, but he ended up taking the reins from Kirk Cousins toward the end of his rookie year. He revealed he was wrapping up a trip to Costco when he received the news after getting that promotion, and his fiancée proved that was the case by sharing a great video of that momentous phone call.
In 2024, the Atlanta Falcons used the eighth overall pick in the NFL Draft to scoop up Michael Penix Jr. out of Washington. That selection caught most people off guard—including Kirk Cousins, who had seemingly cemented his status as the franchise quarterback for the foreseeable future after signing a four-year, $180 million deal less than two months before.
Penix got a handful of snaps in garbage time before things took an interesting turn in the wake of Atlanta’s win over the Raiders in Week 15. The Falcons were still in contention for a playoff spot while sitting at 7-7, but Cousins’ underwhelming play up to that point led to the team deciding to appoint Penix to the starting role.
The QB revealed he was about to order a hot dog at Costco when he got the phone call where he was informed of that development, a revelation that somewhat ironically gave off some serious Kirk Cousins Energy.

There was no reason to doubt that story, but we now have some proof that it was indeed the truth.
Penix led the Falcons to a 34-7 win in his first start, but Atlanta lost its final two games and ended up on the outside looking in once the postseason rolled around.
Cousins is still on the roster, but all signs point to Penix retaining his starting role as the franchise reportedly continues to attempt to orchestrate a trade to move his presumed backup, who will be 37 years old when the 2025 NFL season kicks off.
As Penix noted in the video posted above, his girlfriend, Olivia Carter, joined him during the Costco excursion where he learned about his promotion. She became his fiancée after he proposed a couple of weeks later, and on Wednesday, she celebrated the start of training camp by sharing a clip of the moment her future husband got the news on her Instagram Story.
The video in question shows Penix standing near the food court next to a cart home to a pack of Kirkland Signature paper towels as he coyly reacts to the fairly life-changing call.
It’s a shame he lost his appetite after he hung up, as I can’t think of a better way to celebrate than chowing down on a $1.50 hot dog.
