Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Bayron Matos is still hospitalized as of Thursday morning.
Matos was airlifted from Miami’s training camp on Wednesday following a scary collision in practice, and it appears the injury necessitated the extreme measures employed.
Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, who cites the player’s agent, Perlesta Hollingsworth, reports that he has not left the hospital and is still undergoing tests.
Initial reports claimed the young OL sustained an injury “above the shoulder,” though it’s unclear as to whether it’s to his neck, spine, or elsewhere. His agent has revealed that he is having difficulty moving his right leg.
The injury occurred when Matos collided with a teammate near the end of practice. He was airlifted to a local hospital after examination.
“Bayron Matos sustained an injury at the end of Wednesday’s practice and was transported to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he remained overnight for evaluation and testing,” the Dolphins said in a statement on Thursday morning.
The team noted that the player “has movement in all extremities and is in stable condition.”
“He will remain in the care of doctors for continued observation,” they added.
Bayron Matos is a Dominican Republic native who grew up playing basketball and baseball. He moved to the U.S. to play high school basketball and committed to New Mexico after receiving offers from multiple colleges.
Matos transferred to South Florida in 2021 and started playing football, joining the Bulls as a walk-on special teams player. He moved to the offensive line in 2022.
The 24-year-old entered the 2024 NFL Draft via the NFL International Player Pathway program and later signed with Miami as an undrafted free agent.
We wish him a speedy recovery.
