Mel Kiper’s newest mock draft has Seahawks taking ‘best pure guard in this class’

Same position, different player to the Seahawks in Kiper’s second 2025 NFL Mock Draft.

ESPN NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr has been hard at work creating content for us developing his latest mock draft ahead of the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine. If you recall his initial mock draft, he had the Seattle Seahawks selecting Missouri tackle Armand Membou at No. 18, with the intention of moving him to guard.

We’ve seen the Seahawks do that before with James Carpenter in 2011 and Germain Ifedi (for all of one season) in 2016, so not unreasonable! But Membou’s stock appears to be rising out of Seattle’s range, hence he has him now going to the Miami Dolphins at No. 13. It’s time for a change of plans! Kiper has switched things up by going for Alabama’s Tyler Booker, who was a guard in college and would remain so in the pros.

Here’s the rundown:

Tyler Booker, G, Alabama

Booker is the best pure guard in this class. And while addressing the interior might not be the most exciting first-round pick, it’s a problem in Seattle. Laken Tomlinson is a free agent, and the middle of the Seahawks’ offensive line contributed to the team’s 54 sacks allowed (tied for third most). Booker is strong enough to anchor, allowing one sack in three seasons at Alabama. And he is able to open running lanes, which could pop Kenneth Walker III for some big runs.

We’ve profiled Booker a tiny bit in the past since The Athletic also projected him to Seattle. He’s only 20 years old and comes in at an imposing 6’5” and 350 lbs. He was an All-American First-Team selection in 2024 and All-SEC in 2023 and 2024, maintaining his high standards even while Alabama dipped a bit under head coach Kalen DeBoer.

The major question will be scheme fit and whether Booker can work in an outside zone scheme, which is what offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak intends to primarily use. There will be gap schemes, inside zone, etc. incorporated but Booker’s talent may not necessarily matchup with what Seattle wants to run.

There’s no doubt that Booker will be highly sought after by several teams. We’ll check in on his combine results later this weekend.
