McVay confirms good news on Stafford

Los Angeles Rams fans were already feeling good about a solid preseason win Saturday to open the 2025 campaign, but now they have even more to smile about as head coach Sean McVay confirmed after the game that QB Matthew Stafford will return to practice Monday after being out all of camp with back soreness.

This news comes after the team ran the veteran quarterback through a workout prior to the game that seemingly went well. McVay added that there were “no limitations in terms of the types of throws” during the workout.

“It was awesome,” McVay said of the scheduled workout Stafford went through on Saturday, in which he estimated Stafford threw 68 passes. “He looked good. He threw the ball really well. There was no limitations in terms of the types of throws – deep, intermediate, short. We were moving the launch point. And he felt really good, and so looking forward to progressing him back into practice on Monday, but it was a good step in the right direction.”

Stafford did not participate in any training camp practices or any of the joint practices with the Cowboys. It was confirmed that Stafford also received an epidural for the aggravated disc that was causing his back soreness, which McVay said was part of the plan in working with spine specialist Dr. Robert Watkins and nothing unexpected.

Stafford was already not scheduled to participate in Wednesday’s joint practice with the Chargers, but then that practice had to be canceled because of the Chargers’ injury situation, according to McVay. Los Angeles lost their starting LT Rashawn Slater to a season-ending patella tear Thursday – a devastating hit to their offensive unit.

Stafford will stick to mostly individual drills on Monday, working him back in easy to limit any potential setbacks prior to Week 1. While the team is still being careful with their star QB, the fact Stafford will be back on grass with the team in any capacity is a huge relief with under a month until the Rams opening game September 7th against the Houston Texans.
