“Ted Thompson had nothing to do with the drafting of Jordan Love”
Earlier this week, Netflix released “Aaron Rodgers: Enigma,” a docu-series covering the career of the former Green Bay Packers quarterback. The most interesting scene in the entire series, which shared little new information for those who have followed Rodgers throughout his NFL career, was one where current Packers head coach Matt LaFleur appeared to have told the film crew that former general manager Ted Thompson believed that Jordan Love was “too good to pass up” in the first-round of the 2020 draft.
At the time, Thompson was working as a senior advisor for the Packers, and current general manager Brian Gutekunst was already in his third year in the role. That’s big news that Thompson made the pick then, right? Wrong!
This morning, ESPN Milwaukee’s Jason Wilde stated on his radio show that Thompson was not a major factor in the selection of Love back in 2020 and that the working theory is that the film crew spliced together different clips to form that sentence that made the documentary.
After practice on Thursday, LaFleur was asked about the documentary — which he said he hadn’t seen but that he had been made aware of the discourse. LaFleur seems to be siding with Wilde on this one, claiming, “I think what we were trying to do was draw parallels to Ted drafting Aaron and Gutey drafting Jordan.”
He added, “Ted Thompson had nothing to do with the drafting of Jordan Love.”
Now the big question is why the documentary team allegedly spliced clips together in an effort to give credit for the drafting of Love to another general manager. I’ve seen plenty of accusations online from people who believe that Rodgers’ involvement in the documentary could have pushed this agenda.
The last thing I’m going to do is wade into the Rodgers waters again, though. I’ve done my time. This book is closed.
