The million-dollar question right now in Green Bay is whether the Packers will or won’t bring back head coach Matt LaFleur, who entered the year without an extension in the first year of new president and CEO Ed Policy’s tenure with the team.
Per the reporting, Policy and LaFleur both want LaFleur to be back with the team in 2026, with both ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport claiming that LaFleur wasn’t coaching for his job against the Chicago Bears. With that being said, LaFleur still doesn’t have a deal in hand, and his team finished the year 0-5 after coming into 2025 with Super Bowl aspirations, which were only given a shot in the arm with the trade of defensive end Micah Parsons.
The Bears game was about as brutal to watch as any, as the Packers slowly bled away a lead they built early on in the game by allowing Chicago to score 25 points in the fourth quarter, all while their offense sputtered.
So, considering the circumstances, the press pool asked LaFleur about his contract situation. Here’s the exchange.
Reporter: You have a year left on your contract, and [president/CEO Ed] Policy has said he doesn’t like lame duck seasons. Do you expect to be back next season? Have you guys already started negotiating that deal?
LaFleur: With all due respect to your question, Pete, now is not the time for that. I mean, I’m just hurting for these guys. I can only think about what just happened. There will be time for that.
Many coaches, including some who would later be fired within hours, have used this opportunity to say something along the lines of “I will be back in 2026,” and then make their case. Instead, LaFleur simply said those conversations are for another time.
He was asked two more times, and continued to state that he wasn’t “going to get into that.” Meanwhile, quarterback Jordan Love has said that LaFleur “should definitely be the head coach” in 2026.
LaFleur later added, “It means everything to me,” when asked what being the head coach of Green Bay means to him. “This is the greatest organization in the world, in my opinion.”
