Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph gives his honest opinion about the recent addition of Aaron Rodgers.
PITTSBURGH — Mason Rudolph was in line to be the Pittsburgh Steelers starting quarterback since he reunited with the team in March. However, that quickly came to an end last weekend when the Steelers officially landed Aaron Rodgers following a months-long pursuit.
Rudolph opened up about having to go back into a backup role to Rodgers on Tuesday.
“I assumed they were gonna bring someone in,” Rudolph said. “Another day in the NFL. You move on and try to make the most of the reps you’re getting.”
Many have made the argument that Rudolph is deserving of another shot at the starting job after leading Pittsburgh to three straight victories and a playoff spot in 2023.
Rudolph knows that is not going to happen, though, and head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed that.
“I don’t,” Tomlin said when asked if he envisions a quarterback competition this summer.
Rudolph has still been taking the first-team reps during mandatory minicamp, but that is only temporary as Rodgers learns the Steelers offense.
It’s not often a team has the opportunity to land a player of Rodgers caliber. The four-time NFL MVP’s best football may be behind him, but he still gives Pittsburgh the best chance to win, even at 41.
That is why Rudolph is just hoping to soak up as much knowledge as he can so that he can take advantage of the next time he gets another shot to start.
“Big name. Storied career,” Rudolph said of Rodgers. “It’s been fun to go to work with him for a couple days now and learn about him.”
