Behind the Steel Curtain
The Pittsburgh Steelers failed to make any trades for a receiver at the NFL trade deadline. That said, they did sign free agent Marquez Valdes-Scantling to their practice squad.
Valdes-Scantling spent the first four seasons of his career with Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay with the Packers before going to Kansas City and winning a pair of Super Bowls with the Chiefs. Last season, he began the preseason with the Buffalo Bills before signing with the New Orleans Saints, catching four touchdown passes through the course of the 2024 season.
Speaking to the media for the first time since signing with the Steelers, Valdes-Scantling was asked if Rodgers played a role in his decision to come to Pittsburgh.
“He is the reason,” Valdes Scantling said via Nick Farabaugh.
Valdes-Scantling was then asked what kind of pitch Rodgers gave to him.
“It was a joint effort,” he said. “He called and we talked about it a couple times. He said he’d love to have me here, made his pitch… I gave Aaron a call and said, ‘let’s do it.‘”
While MVS may not be the shiny new player many fans were hoping for, as several insiders linked Pittsburgh to Jakobi Meyers, the existing chemistry that MVS has with Rodgers, combined with the fact that he is a proven deep threat, it could turn out to be a great move.
