Mark Sanchez was slated to call Sunday’s game between the Colts and the Raiders in Indianapolis when we learned he’d been hospitalized after being stabbed. It initially seemed like he was the victim of a crime, but all signs point to him being the perpetrator now that prosecutors have charged him with a felony that could result in a lengthy prison sentence.
The NFL-player-to-broadcaster pipeline welcomed a new member after Mark Sanchez retired in 2019 to wrap up a career where the quarterback spent time with five different teams over the course of a decade. The former USC standout took his talents to Fox in 2021, and he’s spent the past four years calling games in the booth while also contributing the their coverage in the studio.
Sanchez has been working alongside play-by-play guy Adam Admin since last season, and the two of them headed to Indianapolis last week for Sunday’s showdown between the Raiders in the Colts. However, things took a turn on Saturday after the color commentator was hospitalized with a stab wound in an incident that Adam Schefter initially positioned as a robbery.
However, it didn’t take long for more details to emerge that suggested Sanchez was actually the aggressor in an altercation where he allegedly attacked a 69-year-old man who told police he stabbed him in self-defense after being attacked by the retired QB.
Sanchez was initially hit with three misdemeanors, but things have gotten more serious after an additional charge was thrown into the mix on Monday.
Sanchez was still in the hospital on Sunday when he learned he’d been charged with three misdemeanors—battery with injury, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle, and public intoxication—due to his role in the altercation that also left his alleged victim, who was picking up used fryer oil at a hotel at the time of the incident, with a large gash on his face.
He was taken to jail for processing after being discharged and was released after posting a $300 bond, but that number is likely to rise based on what unfolded on Monday.
According to ABC News, Sanchez has now been charged with battery involving serious bodily injury, a felony that carries a sentence of between one and six years in prison. Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears says the decision stemmed from the “significant and very serious injuries” the unnamed victim sustained and noted other charges could be thrown into the mix as the investigation continues to unfold.
Sanchez is slated to appear in court to answer to the charges on Tuesday.
