Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman has found himself at the center of national coaching chatter after his name surfaced in connection with the New York Giants’ head coaching vacancy.

Several reports over the past week linked Freeman among early candidates on the Giants’ list as they search for a replacement for fired coach Brian Daboll.

According to The Athletic, Freeman is among the five potential head coaches under review, alongside NFL coordinators and offensive minds such as Jeff Hafley, Lou Anarumo, Kliff Kingsbury, and Klint Kubiak.

However, Freeman’s presence on that list almost backfired because he has no NFL coaching experience. Despite leading the Fighting Irish to a 10–2 record in 2025 and overseeing a season that included a long winning streak, his résumé remains entirely collegiate.

And just when the news hit social media platforms, football fans almost immediately picked it up and started mocking him.

“He’s gone,” a fan commented.

“Eliminated from Wild Card spot, doesn’t show up to the last 4 regular season games,” another one wrote.

“Gave me a heart attack,” a third one laughed.

“He’s not going anywhere,” a fourth one added.

“Whoever got the bigger bag,” the fifth fan took a dig.

“He ain’t going to win a natty. If the time is right go on and go,” another one mocked him.

“He’s been on every team’s radar,” a user punched in.

“He’s not that guy and nobody wants him in Hollywood,” a fan came with a brutal fact.

However, Giants fans, already frustrated by a rough season and coaching turnover history, reacted with skepticism about such a high-profile college coach being touted as a choice.

Marcus Freeman Speculated To Attract More Teams

While it was a hard pill to swallow for the football fans, the Giants’ offer wasn’t the only one standing before Freeman. Multiple outlets, including The Athletic and Chicago Sports, report that Freeman is drawing interest from more NFL teams beyond New York.

According to Chicago Sports, insiders believe the Giants’ reported interest could be just the start, with several NFL organizations expected to consider Freeman when making coaching decisions in the coming weeks.

Freeman’s profile has risen significantly over his four-plus years at Notre Dame, where he compiled a 43–12 record and led the Irish to the national championship game the previous season.

Additionally, his leadership and success at a marquee college program are the reasons why NFL franchises are watching closely as the next big coaching piece.
