The Los Angeles Chargers opened with authority on their first possession, moving swiftly into the Kansas City Chiefs’ territory behind back-to-back play-action completions. Rookie running back Omarion Hampton provided the spark, breaking three tackles on a physical 16-yard run that set the tone early.
Justin Herbert finished the drive himself, tucking the ball and racing 15 yards into the end zone to give Los Angeles the first points of the afternoon.
The Chiefs responded in typical fashion. Patrick Mahomes led a balanced march down the field, turning to Hollywood Brown as his go-to option. The receiver caught five passes on the drive for 38 yards, including the touchdown grab that leveled the score. Mahomes also showcased his mobility, adding 20 yards on the ground with two timely scrambles.

Herbert absorbed a massive hit from linebacker Nick Bolton on a read-option keeper, but it didn’t slow him down as he engineered another efficient drive. Tight end Will Dissly chipped in with two catches for 27 yards, each moving the chains, while Hampton slipped into the passing game, turning a screen into a 16-yard gain. Herbert capped the series by hitting Ladd McConkey on a post route for a touchdown.
The momentum shifted immediately on the extra point attempt. Chris Jones powered through to block the kick. Joshua Williams scooped it up, taking it the other way for two points to keep Kansas City within striking distance.
While Mahomes’ next drive started unevenly, he reminded everyone of his playmaking ability on a third-and-long, scrambling 27 yards to keep the series alive. Out of the two-minute warning, he found Travis Kelce in the end zone to give the Chiefs their first lead of the game. But the Chargers answered on special teams, returning the favor with a blocked extra point of their own to keep the score tight at halftime.
End of the second quarter: Chiefs 15, Chargers 13
The Chiefs’ ground game continued to stall, but Mahomes kept the offense moving through the air. He connected with Kelce for a 14-yard gain that pushed Kansas City into Chargers territory, then found JuJu Smith-Schuster for 16 yards on a third-and-11 conversion. A 21-yard strike to Kelce set the Chiefs up at the two-yard line, and Mahomes went right back to his future Hall of Famer tight end for their second touchdown connection of the night.
Herbert answered quickly, taking control of the next drive with four straight first-down conversions. His biggest throw came on a 30-yard strike to Keenan Allen that moved the Chargers deep into the red zone. From there, rookie Hampton showcased his awareness, hauling in a tipped pass in the end zone for a touchdown to even the score once again.
