New England Patriots former quarterback Mac Jones is having a good season as the backup quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers.
Jones has started eight games this season, with starting quarterback Brock Purdy dealing with a toe injury, and has thrown for 2,251 yards, eight touchdowns and six interceptions.
However, with Purdy returning last week and with Jones likely only going to see the field again due to a Purdy injury, his days in the Bay Area could be coming to an end soon.
San Francisco 49ers On SI writer Grant Cohn named possible teams Jones could be traded to this upcoming season and labeled the New York Jets a possibility.
“The Jets need a quarterback, but they have absolutely no offensive identity, so it’s unclear if they’d be interested in Jones, Cohn wrote on Friday. “It’s also unlikely that Jones would succeed on the Jets, considering no one succeeds there, not even Aaron Rodgers.
“With that in mind, the I wouldn’t be surprised if the Jets were to make a strong push for Jones this offseason simply because they have no idea what they’re doing.”
Jones signed a two-year, $8.4 million contract this offseason, and the Jets are dealing with quarterback issues and benched their free-agent signing, Justin Fields this week.
If the Jets decided to pass on a rookie quarterback, trading for Jones could make a ton of sense and let him be a starter until New York can find a rookie quarterback in 2027.
