Los Angeles Rams Take Next Step Toward Potential Matthew Stafford Trade Amid Disgareement

The Los Angeles Rams were just one play away from making sure that the Philadelphia Eagles never even made it to Super Bowl LIX. Fast forward a month and the Rams are staring down the possibility of a complete rebuild as rumors swirl surrounding the future of superstar quarterback Matthew Stafford.

Stafford’s wife, Kelly, was the first to suggest that the two-time Pro Bowler might play elsewhere in 2025 after Los Angeles opted to cut ties with star wide receiver Cooper Kupp. Kelly Stafford noted that she and Matthew would like to remain in LA, but that they didn’t feel valued by the franchise.

Rumors of a potential trade grew even more legs Mile Florio of Pro Football Talk stated that there was a “weird vibe’ surrounding Stafford and his current employer.

“Although it’s not as dire as the Deshaun Watson debacle in Cleveland, the Rams have a mess. They could kick the cap can by extending his contract, but he’s 37. At what point will the Rams pivot to someone more than a decade younger than Stafford,” Florio posited. “For now, it’s just a weird vibe. And with several teams looking for quarterbacks — Jets, Steelers, Browns, Titans, Raiders, Giants, Saints (maybe) — the Rams likely remain open for business.”

Now there’s even more smoke after Ian Rapoport and Tom Pellissero of NFL Network reported that Stafford’s agent, Jimmy Sexton, is gauging the quarterback’s value around the league after the Rams granted him permission to do so.

“This is not a trade request. Instead, the Rams and Stafford can gain a better understanding of his value outside the team, potentially making it easier to get a contract done,” Rapoport tweeted. “That remains the hope, that outside help can assist in gauging the market and seeing his value — and that this results in his return to LA.”

Sure, it may not be a trade request. But you don’t gauge your value with other teams if ending up on one of those teams is not a possibility. Los Angeles isn’t shoving Stafford out the door. And Stafford isn’t exactly running away. But it sure feels like the two sides are perfectly fine with the possibility of Stafford playing elsewhere in 2025.
