It feels like Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams have been hunting for a future franchise quarterback who can take over after Matthew Stafford’s eventual retirement for several seasons now. We’ve even seen the Rams make some fairly significant investments into their backups.
From Baker Mayfield, to Jimmy Garoppolo, and 2023 fourth-round pick Stetson Bennett, the Rams have rolled the dice on several different types of players. Throughout it all, Stafford feels like the boulder that just won’t budge, even at the age of 37.
Yet, as the years go on, the Rams can’t rest on their laurels. They arguably need to get even more aggressive in targeting Stafford’s replacement, because each year brings him closer to retirement, whenever that may be.
As the Rams approach another offseason, some are getting an early start on pairing coach McVay with his next project. The latest comes from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, who suggested NFC West rival and Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray would be an “interesting option” for LA this offseason.
“The Rams would be an interesting option,” Fowler wrote. “With Matthew Stafford turning 38 in February, Murray could learn Sean McVay’s system and get a chance to potentially start down the road.”
With Stafford only under contract through 2026, the Rams may feel a stronger sense of urgency to head into next season with a capable backup who may even have the potential to develop into something more. Several other franchises have struck gold in recent years, and with coach McVay leading the way, the Rams shouldn’t have much trouble identifying the perfect fit, and it might even be Murray.
