The Los Angeles Rams have offered a brutal injury update on quarterback Matthew Stafford amid his fitness issues.

The NFC team began training camp without their veteran starter, who has been sidelined with back soreness and is set to miss further time, though head coach Sean McVay expects him to be available to play in Week 1.

According to ESPN’s Sarah Barshop, Stafford will not return to practice on Monday, although he hasn’t suffered any setbacks, with the team looking to take things one week at a time.

“McVay said the goal remains to have Stafford back for Week 1,” Barshop noted.

Jimmy Garoppolo To Step Up In Matthew Stafford’s Absence

The Rams had already scheduled a modified workload for the quarterback due to his age and history with back problems. But he’s been shut down for an indefinite period as the team errs on the side of caution.

Backup Jimmy Garoppolo will continue to take first-team reps while Stafford remains out. Stetson Bennett and Dresser Winn are behind him in the pecking order.

Matthew Stafford threw for 3,762 yards and 20 touchdowns last season. He helped L.A. to a playoff win before they lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Divisional Round.

They will hope to have him back for another go at it next season, having added star wide receiver Davante Adams and second-round tight end Terrance Ferguson this offseason.

We wish him a speedy return
