Keenan Allen is one of the best players in Los Angeles Chargers history. And yet, the organization chose to give his jersey number to DJ Uiagalelei. Womp womp.
The former Clemson, Oregon State and Florida State quarterback will wear No. 13 during rookie minicamp. It is the first time that number will be worn since the legendary wide receiver was traded.
Don’t get me wrong. I understand that there are only so many numbers in the NFL. At some point, there are going to be duplicates. Business is business. The Chargers have to move on. I get it!!
With that being said, Keenan Allen is one of the most respected players in the organization’s history. Surely there was another number available.
He made six Pro Bowls, recorded more than 10,000 receiving yards and 60 touchdowns in 11 seasons, and saw the team through its transition from San Diego to Los Angeles. There is an argument to be made that his number should be completely retired.
Allen at the very least deserves to one day be inducted into the Chargers Hall of Fame. A third-round pick became one of the all-time greats and always remained loyal through the hardship of terrible seasons. He only left because he was traded.
Los Angeles chose not to give Allen’s number to a rookie last season. It left the door open for a potential reunion down the road. That no longer seems to be a possibility.
DJ Uiagalelei, one of the biggest busts in college football history, will wear No. 13 for the Chargers.
Uiagalelei will compete with Trey Lance and Taylor Heinicke for the QB2 and QB3 jobs behind Justin Herbert. He signed for just $3,000.
The good news is that there is almost no way he will make the roster. No. 13 will not be worn on the field or on the sideline during the regular season. The bad news is that the first Los Angeles Chargers player to wear No. 13 after Keenan Allen is DJ Uiagalelei. Gross.
