Los Angeles Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz accidentally exposed himself for having a burner account on social media. (Maybe.) The 49-year-old put himself on blast while discussing the most pressing issue surrounding his organization at the NFL Draft Combine.

He is aware of the chatter about wide receivers on X, formerly known as Twitter, which means he must be active on the website and/or app.

Hortiz was hired by the Los Angeles Chargers last January after a long run with the Baltimore Ravens. All decisions on player personnel and scouting matters, including free agency and the NFL Draft go through him. Nobody is going in or out without his approval.

Thus, as the NFL Draft Combine gets underway in Indianapolis this week, everybody wants to know what Hortiz plans to do with the No. 22 overall pick in April. The Chargers need an edge rusher, defensive tackle, center, safety, tight end and wide receiver. Not necessarily in that order.

Justin Herbert is one of the most talented quarterbacks in the National Football League. His supporting cast is underwhelming. Ladd McConkey was awesome as a rookie but he cannot do it by himself. Quentin Johnson has been largely underwhelming and Josh Palmer is best as WR3 or even WR4.

Los Angeles needs to add a legitimate vertical threat to give McConkey — and Herbert — some relief. But who could that be?

If you were to ask social media, the answer ranges from Cooper Kupp to Tetairoa McMillan to Keenan Allen to Roc Taylor and everyone in between. That’s Hortiz’s point. He said at the NFL Draft Combine on Tuesday that he is focused on the wide receivers on the roster and the wide receivers they are evaluating in the draft and free agency. It was a total nonanswer.

We’re linked to every receiver out there. It’s unbelievable. I mean, just go on Twitter, and it’s like, “Oh, this guy, this guy, this guy.”

— Joe Hortiz

Here’s the catch. Hortiz does not have an official account on X, formerly Twitter, that is attached to his name. He does not have a blue checkmark. His name does not even pull when you search it.

You cannot scroll the main X feed without an account. So if he is “going on Twitter” like he says, that implies the existence of a burner account. Will the real Joe Hortiz please stand up?!
